After the collapse of the Soviet Union in the late 1980s, Cuba found itself in a very difficult position. The flow of goods was abruptly cut off, leaving the island nation isolated and in need of basic supplies. Cubans turned to their own ingenuity and bicycles en masse — leading to creative solutions to a variety of problems.
